Why We’re Loony for Lizards

At Nature Box Pet Emporium, we love all things lizards. Generally, lizards have small heads, short necks, and long bodies and tails, and moveable eyelids. They resemble ancient dinosaurs, and include nearly 5,000 species, including iguanas, chameleons, geckos, monitors, skinks, and more. Lizards can be found in every continent across the globe except for Antarctica, and they live in all habitats except extremely cold climates and deep oceans. While different species eat different foods, most eat lizards.

Lizards make great pets because they are low maintenance. Their only requirements are special lighting, good nutrition, and the right care. It also may surprise you to learn that lizards are actually very affectionate creatures! While their attitude towards handling varies from species to species, many lizards like being held.

At Nature Box Pet Emporium, we carry a wide variety of lizard species, including bearded dragons, iguanas, chameleons, geckos, skinks, and more. You can buy live lizards at both our

All About Agamids

Most commonly called “dragons” or “dragon lizards,” agamids are a family of more than 300 iguanian lizards that are indigenous to Africa, Asia, Australia, and Southern Europe. All species of agamids have well-developed limbs, with many displaying keeled scales, middorsal crests, and throat flaps or fans. Agamids come in a diversity of different colors, from very bright to more “bland” varieties.

Bearded dragons are a very popular type of agamid that we carry here at Nature Box Pet Emporium. Their name refers to the underside of their throat, which can turn black and puff out. Generally speaking, bearded dragons are solitary creatures in captivity, and feed on insects such as crickets and dubia roaches, as well as plant-based food like spring greens, endive, kale, and watercress. They also require supplements to stay healthy. It is important to check before feeding something new to your bearded dragon, as it may be toxic to them.

If you have any questions about ordering or caring for a bearded dragon, drop us a line. We are always happy to help you care for your scaly sidekick!

There Are a Chameleon Reasons Why We Love Chameleons

Come-a come-a come-a on over to the chameleon section of our Live Reptiles page! In this section, we discuss just a few of the chameleon reasons we love these Old World Lizards, consisting of more than 200 species, and coming in a range of colors.

Chameleons are distinguished by their swaying gait, crested horns or brows, prehensile tails, protruding eyes, long tongues, and ability to change colors. Chameleons make great pets because they can live for up to a decade, and are totally silent and odorless (given you provide them with the proper care). Many people also find chameleons’ graceful movements incredibly calming to watch, not to mention being utterly fascinated by their changing colors!

Nature Box Pet Emporium is your source for live chameleons for sale in the Aurora area and beyond! We also sell a wide variety of chameleon supplies, food, habitats, and even incubation supplies. Interested in breeding your own chameleons? Check out our guide to breeding panthers here

Geck’yo Act Together and Get a Gecko

What lizard is small, easy to care for, and absolutely adorbs? Geckos! Geckos are little lizards that measure in at about 1.6 to 6 centimeters in length. They are unique among lizards for their vocalizations and the fact that, since they can’t blink, they lick their eyelids to clean them. Their adhesive toe pads enable them to climb smooth and vertical surfaces, so don’t be surprised if you find your pet gecko dancing on the ceiling (oh, what a feeling)! Geckos love to eat insects, including moths and mosquitoes, so if you’re looking for a fun solution to a bug problem in your house, geckos might just be your answer.

One of the most popular types of pet geckos that we carry here at Nature Box Pet Emporium is the pictus gecko. You can learn the ins and outs of caring for your pictus gecko in our comprehensive guide. We also carry crested geckos, leopard geckos, and more!

The Skinny on Skinks

We skinking love skinks. Characterized by their lack or pronounced neck and relatively small legs (in fact, some skinks have no limbs at all), skinks make great pets for beginners and children because they are docile, quiet, gentle, and easily tamed.

Some of the most popular types of skinks to keep as pets include the blue-tongued skink, Schneider’s skink, red-eyed crocodile skink, monkey-tailed skink, and fire skink. Most skinks are carnivores and feed primarily on insects, although the monkey-tailed skink is herbivorous, so they’re a great choice for those who are bugged out by bugs. Skinks require fairly large enclosures, so make sure you have adequate space in your house to care for them.

In short, skinks make skinking great pets for reptile lovers of all ages. Browse our selection of live skins today!

Boa Basics

Boas are some of the popular types of pet snakes around, and for good reason. Their long lifespan (with the right care, some pet boa constrictors can live 40 years or more), impressive size and intricate morphs make them a fascinating and fun pet. Despite their formidable reputation, pet boa constrictors are usually quite docile and can learn to enjoy handling, although it is important to always be mindful of their inherent strength.

Because of their large size, it is important to provide an adequate enclosure for your boa constrictor. Proper housing for an adult boa will be at least 6-8 feet long and 2-3 feet high and wide, with a humid climate, a hiding space, a perch, and a comfortable substrate for them to lie down on. If you’re considering purchasing a boa constrictor or have any questions about caring for your current boa, get in touch with the reptile-savvy team at Nature Box Pet Emporium today!

If you’re looking for a non-venomous, relatively undemanding snake to call your own, then colubrids are a great choice. Colubrids are a large family of snakes that includes two-thirds of all snake species. At Nature Box Pet Emporium, we sell live colubrids to customers at our Aurora store and online. Some of the most popular colubrid species that we carry include corn snakes, kingsnakes, and milk snakes.

In addition to being low maintenance, colubrids are also some of the most affordable pet snakes available, starting at just $59.99.Check out the video the left to watch Nature Box employee Elisa show off a few cool corns, then browse our colubrid selection!

Be a Ball Python Baller

Ball pythons are docile and easy to care for, making them a great beginner pet. These non-venomous constrictors have a stocky build, with the average adult weighing between three and four pounds, and living between 20 and 30 years with proper care. Ball pythons are nocturnal, somewhat shy, and like to eat mice and small rats

We are proud to carry a diversity of stunning ball python morphs. For ball python newbies,  “morphs” are genetic mutations that cause unique colors, patterns, and shapes among different ball pythons. While morphism is a natural effect of evolution, today specialized breeders will purposefully isolate different genetic mutations to create specific morphs. Check out a few of the most popular ball python morphs that we carry below.

Yes, We Shell Turtles & Tortoises!

Belonging to the Testudines family of reptiles, turtles and tortoises are low-maintenance pets that will be with you for decades; Despite what you might think, these carpaced cuties have turtley awesome personalities — some might even call them feisty!  At Nature Box Pet Emporium, we breed and sell many terrific testudines, including spiny turtles, Russian tortoises, sulcata tortoises, and more. Whether you’re looking for an aquatic, semi-aquatic, or terrestrial turtle or tortoise, we have the shelly sidekick you need.

While turtles and tortoises make great pets, it’s important to do your homework before deciding on a species to adopt. Some testudines, such as Russian tortoises, grow to be less than a foot in length, while others, like the Sulcata tortoise, can eventually weigh in at 75 pounds or more. While sulcatas make amazing pets, you’ll have to make sure you have a large enough backyard or other grazing area and that you’re willing to accommodate their impressive appetites before introducing these friendly and curious critters into your home.
